Kathleen de la Pena McCook writes "Toronto urban thinker Jane Jacobs has won the $15,000 Writers' Trust of Canada Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing -- an award she received April 14 at a gala attended by Prime Minister Paul Martin.
The award is for the 88-year-old writer's latest book, Dark Age Ahead , which warns that Western society will remain stuck in a downward spiral unless it changes its path.
In 1961, Jane Jacobs wrote what is probably the most important book ever written on city planning, The Death and Life of Great American Cities , which demolished modernist city planning and set off the revival of old-fashioned neighborhoods that later inspired the New Urbanists.
