My neighbor is not the smartest girl in the world. She is married to a man with two young children (his not hers) and they had decided to home school their children. She had mentioned this a few months ago and wanted good resources. I of course told her the local library could offer all sorts of assistance.
I have talked to homeschoolers when I worked full time at the library, and they are indeed a different breed.
Yesterday as I was coming home from work my neighbor was coming up the walk as well. She was indignant. She still wanted to home school her step-children, but could not understand how she was supposed to get the teacher, the school system told her she was on her own.
I tried to explain it, but she refuses to believe me. She thinks someone owes her a school teacher.
I really have to move out of Florida.

Not the smartest is underplaying it a bit!
Soundslike you need to make sure those kids get to know about the Library asap as they're not going to get much parental help!
Is Florida bad for people of restricted knowledge?

Florida is the home of people of limited knowledge. My proudest moment of not being a native Floridian was when I saw the shirtless gentleman with "Pork Chop" tatooed on his ample belly. I did, however, feel compassion for the biscuits and gravy which were overlooked in having been given credit for his embonpoint.
Oh dear, oh dear...
Unfortunately there are far too many people like this in the home school movement. It gives the rest of us a bad name. I know at least one family here in Oklahoma that claimed to be homeschooling its kids, but was just keeping the eldest daughters home to babysit. They both left home as soon as possible and got their GEDs on their own. (My child, on the other hand, was home schooled and is a National Merit Scholar. Don't assume all home schoolers are alike!) And check out the recent Unshelved strips -- right now Dewey is dealing with a home-school kid in the Mallville library.
