Know Your Library

Know Your Library is a community based organization seeking to provide information to parents regarding library materials and services available to minor patrons through the St. Louis County Library system. Know Your Library, along with several other community based organizations, has requested that the the library board provide assistance to parents who are seeking information in an effort to determine suitability of material and services for their own minor children. This assistance would be offered through the provision of additional information and cataloging services.

Know your library pressure groups

Know Your Library is the new front for Laura Kostial and Citizens Against Pornography -- the group that's been bedeviling the staff of the St. Louis County Library over the content of young adult books. (Laura Kostial is the woman who created an unauthorized YA book display of controversial books and then accused the library of distributing pornographic materials to minors,according to School Library Journal. (Kostial subsequently tried to get the local prosecutor to charge the library with distributing obscene and harmful to minors materials to minors. The prosecutor refused.)

Kostial's old website, Community Library Watch, refers directly to the Know Your Library site.

According to the St. Louis newspapers, the "additional information and cataloging services" would be content ratings imposed by a panel of parents using the MPAA ratings system - apparently their new tactic after their challenges were rebuffed by the library board and library director.
