Fit punishment?

Now, I wonder what the thieves' defence would be? Deprived childhood, unhappy upbringing, bad genes, temporary insanity, cruel society? Poor things! They'll blame everything and everyone else except themselves. Fit punishment would be to confiscate their most valuable possession e.g. their whole CD collection, their car, their stereo, their flatscreen digital TV. This may get the message across.
