School libraries find it's not so easy to part with old books

It turns out you really can judge a book by its cover, especially if the title is something like "Siam Today."

For K-12 librarians, it's a no-brainer to toss a book that's full of outdated, often politically incorrect information. But they say it's a public relations nightmare when taxpayers find out librarians actually toss out books.

"It looked like a Nazi book-burning," is how Grand Rapids' Riverside Middle School media specialist Becky Goodspeed described her first few months of book-weeding in that library six years ago.

Last copy centers!!! We need

Last copy centers!!! We need regional last copy centers for the items we pull--even the Larence Welk bio!

Lawrence Welk

My grandmother always used to watch the Lawrence Welk show. After seeing the cover of that book I went and read the Wikipedia entry about him. Very interesting.

L.W.

I remember the show. About as interesting as watching milk ferment, but alot of people didn't know that back then. It wouldn't even get on the air today; maybe on the 'nearly dead folks' channel.

Saturdays @7PM

The local public station has it on in Tampa. I can tape it for you -assuming I can figure the VCR out. Now it is just a clock that is right twice a day.

Bubble books

Don't worry about the Welk bio. Thirteen libraries in our consortium still have it. He's a local boy.
