Denver Public Library Ranks Number One!

M. Celeste Jackson writes \"Denver Public Library today announces it has been ranked the Number One Public Library in the nation for libraries serving a population of 500,000 or more by Hennen\'s American Public Library Ratings (HAPLR Index). This rating system identifies the best public libraries in America.\"

Rocky Mountain News has a story as well.
Celeste Jackson:
\"Denver was compared to 76 library systems nationwide on 15 factors. The rating index focuses on circulation, staffing, materials, reference service and funding levels. The scores, similar to an ACT or SAT score were ranked between 1 and 1,000 with the Denver Public Library receiving a rating of 890. The total scores of all Colorado libraries gave Colorado a state ranking of 6th best in the nation, up from 15th in the last rating.

The 2002 HAPLR Index is based on 2000 data reported in calendar year 2001. The information was collected by state and submitted to the Federal State Cooperative Service (FSCS). The Index can be accessed online at www.haplr-index.com for additional detail.

\"The Denver Public Library is delighted to again be named the number one library in the nation,\" said Library Commission President Wesley Brown, \"we are pleased the award recognizes our being good stewards of our funding and resources. In this uncertain budgetary climate, we are challenged in our work to provide top-notch service and build a collection that serves our customers well; the support of the citizens of Denver remains critical to our continued success.\"

City Librarian Rick Ashton remarked, \"Receiving the number one rating for the second consecutive year is an honor, not only for the Library, but for the City and our taxpayers who contribute their excellent support. We are dedicated to serving the community and look to the citizens of Denver to champion our efforts.\"

The other libraries in the top five in addition to Denver included the Columbus Metropolitan Library (OH), the Multnomah County Library (Ore.), the Baltimore County Public Library (Md.) and Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (Ind.).
