Since the rise of Napster and other file sharing services in its wake, most of us have assumed that intellectual piracy is a product of the digital age and that it threatens creative expression as never before. The Motion Picture Association of America, for instance, claimed that in 2005 the film industry lost $2.3 billion in revenue to piracy online. But here Adrian Johns shows that piracy has a much longer and more vital history than we have realized—one that has been largely forgotten and is little understood.

Exchange Copyright for Fair Use

Most publishers and authors don't realize that they exchange copyright for fair use. Thus, in order to make an item copyrighted, it had to be available for use by the public, either through an open library or libraries, or for attrributed quotes.

Instead, they seem to think this is a free gift granted to their genius, and copyright means all control for all time. Not even a patent is granted as much leeway as a copyright. A patent must pay to have it renewed, and it can only be renewed once. The idea that something can be copyrighted for fifty years after the death of the author, and that everything is copyrighted since 1923, is preposterous. However, this shows the effects of strong lobbying on politicians.

These politicians will screw the country in order to have the blessing of Disney and some computer software geeks.
