What happened to Second Life?

What happened to Second Life?
Not long ago Second Life was everywhere, with businesses opening branches and bands playing gigs in this virtual world. Today you'd be forgiven for asking if it's still going. But just as quickly as it had flared, media interest ebbed away. References plummeted by 40% in 2008 and dropped further this year. And businesses diverted their resources back to real life.

I went to a conference one

I went to a conference one time where the speaker was an avid second lifer. and she told the audience that they couldbe "anything they wanted to be" on SL--even a furry! Which I am sure that to these librarians that sounded like fun, but furries are obviously not what the speaker thought they were.

I cant stand SL. and I am a gamer.

First Life

Second Life? That's after work & on the weekends when I'm with my cats, friends, & family and set out & about relaxing.

Really, we had "Second Life" when I was finishing up my MLIS...what a joke! Honestly as if I didn't have enough to do working full time and working online all hours of the night on my degree!

If you have all that extra time for a "second life", what must your first life be like?

>^..^<

Second Life can be part of first life

Auntie, there are people taking classes in SL, including for college credit. There are even librarians and other professionals paid to be in SL on the clock. It is not just an activity that occurs during "extra time".

I am not in SL all that often. But when I do participate, I am collaborating with fellow librarians, attending a meeting or presentation, or attending an educational opportunity.

It's Kind of Like a Book

Second Life is kind of like a book, or a movie. It is a chance to let go of the real world and go someplace else. If you don't like reading Harry Potter or watching House on TV or really listening to music (not background noise), then you won't like Second Life either.

More power to you.

However, if there ever is a time when you aren't so busy or when your cat or a family member is annoying you no end, it's time to let go of Real Life for an hour or two and go dancing in Second Life. When was the last time you went dancing?

When was the last time you went dancing?

I was out dancing two weeks ago Saturday.....

I go dancing often...tyvm.

World of Warcraft is more fun.

I think the answer is, MMORPGs are more fun, like World of Warcraft, where you get to fight and blow stuff up rather than just walk around a 3D world.

That and most of us are too preoccupied with 1st Life to take on a 2nd.

TWITTER

will the same be said of twitter? Most likely.

TWITTER? No.

Twitter, as annoyingly ubiquitous as it is right now, is at least a communication tool, and a very effective one for some applications. Second Life was always a flashy time-waster, a barrier to communication more than anything else.
